Going Mobile With Mobify

They Call Me Marty Mobile Site

Today, I launched the mobile version of They Call Me Marty! Much has been said about the importance of having a mobile version of your site, and even though I understand the importance of a mobile version, designing a stylesheet for mobile devices felt like I had design the site all over again. Today, Mobify came to the rescue!

I first heard of Mobify through Chris Coyer over at CSS-Tricks. With Mobify, making a mobile version of your site is fast, easy and even fun.

My Experience with Mobify

Getting my head around Mobify took a couple of tries. I had a little trouble with the Mobify UI, it seemed confusing—mostly due to the fact that I was approaching it like a mobile version of Dreamweaver. Once I got comfortable with the interface it became easier. If you have the time to go through the forums go for it, otherwise, don’t bother. Searching for anything specific always returns zero results, but there’s always google.

Choosing the content to display be displayed on the mobile version of your site is simple and probably the best part of the process. Mobify is also smart enough to figure out what pages share similar content, so once you are done with one template, you can easily let Mobify apply the style to your inner pages. There are plugins/Extensions for various blogging/CMS engines like WordPress, ExpressionEngine that make recognizing a mobile device easy. I chose to use the Javascript code provided by Mobify. The only real requirement is to have access to your registrar or host in order to create a CNAME record. Some hosting companies/registrars don’t provide easy access so you’ll have to check with them.
